Private Maths Tutor
Primary maths tutoring in West London and online.
One-to-one maths lessons for children in Years 2 to 6. I find the exact step your child is stuck on, teach it properly, and build from there. The result is a child who understands the method, works more accurately, and stops dreading maths homework.

A private maths tutor works one-to-one with your child to find the gaps that hold them back and close them in the right order. As a primary maths tutor, I teach Years 2 to 6 across number, calculation, fractions, measurement, geometry and problem-solving, so your child understands why a method works instead of memorising steps.

A Primary Maths Tutor Who Explains Things Clearly
About Kate
I have spent 13 years teaching across the primary years. In that time I have met very few children who are truly "bad at maths". Usually one early step was missed, perhaps place value or the link between division and fractions, and everything built on top of it feels shaky.
My job as a private mathematics tutor is to find that step and fix it. I use objects and drawings first, then pictures, then numbers, so a new idea makes sense before it becomes a written method.
Lessons are always one-to-one and I keep my numbers small each year, which means I know exactly where every pupil is and what they need next.
How I Teach Maths
Every new idea is shown three ways: with something to hold or draw, with a picture, and then with numbers. When a child can explain a method back to me in their own words, I know it has stuck.
How Maths Tutoring Works
A simple four-step process, with clear feedback to parents so you always know what your child is working on and why.
1. Find the
Gaps
A relaxed assessment shows what your child knows and where the confusion starts.
2. Build a
Plan
A personalised plan that fixes foundations first, then moves forward.
3. Teach &
Practise
Clear explanations, worked examples and plenty of guided practice.
4. Apply &
Stretch
Problem-solving, reasoning and timed work for school tests or the 11+.
Maths Tutoring at Home or in Person
Families who want a mathematics home tutor often choose online lessons, so their child learns at the kitchen table without the travel. We work live on a shared digital whiteboard, and I can see every step of your child's working as they write it.
If you are in West London, in-person sessions are also available. Many families mix the two. The teaching, the plan and the calm, patient approach stay exactly the same either way.
- Live one-to-one lessons, never group classes
- Working checked step by step, not just the answer
- Regular updates so parents can support at home

Maths Tutoring FAQs
A primary maths tutor works one-to-one with a child in Years 2 to 6 to fix gaps in understanding, build fluency with number and calculation, and develop problem-solving skills. Lessons follow a personalised plan rather than a fixed scheme.
Common signs are counting on fingers in Year 4 or later, avoiding maths homework, careless errors under time pressure, or a teacher mentioning gaps in times tables or fractions. Some families also come to me simply to stretch a child who finds school maths too easy.
Yes, when it is one-to-one and interactive. I use a shared whiteboard so I can watch your child work through each step, correct a slip immediately and adapt the lesson in real time.
Yes. 11+ maths often goes beyond the Year 5 curriculum, so I teach any missing topics, then focus on the multi-step reasoning and speed that 11+ papers demand. See my 11+ exam preparation page for more.
Most pupils have one lesson a week. Before an exam some families move to two sessions a week for a term. We agree what suits your child during the introductory consultation.
Every lesson is one-to-one with me, I take a limited number of pupils each year, and I focus on calm understanding rather than rushing through worksheets. Children leave lessons more confident, not more anxious.
