An English Language Tutor for Curious Young Readers
About Kate
After 13 years of primary teaching, I have learned that most children who struggle with English are not short of ideas. They are short of tools: a plan for a story, a way to find evidence in a text, the right word at the right moment.
As a private English tutor, I give children those tools one at a time. We read together, talk about what the writer is doing, and then try it ourselves. Grammar is taught inside real sentences, not as a list of terms to memorise.
Because every lesson is one-to-one, I can read your child's writing line by line and show them exactly how to make it better.
My Approach to English
Good writing starts with good reading. When children learn to notice how authors build a sentence or a scene, they start doing it in their own work, and their confidence grows with every piece.
How English Tutoring Works
Every programme starts with your child's reading and writing as they are today, then builds steadily towards the next goal.
1. Reading
Check
We read and discuss a short text to gauge comprehension and fluency.
2. Writing
Sample
A short piece of writing shows strengths, habits and next steps.
3. Focused
Lessons
Targeted teaching on the skills that will make the biggest difference.
4. Exam
Practice
Timed comprehension and writing tasks for the 11+ or SATs.
Strong Foundations for GCSE English
I teach primary-age children, not GCSE students. But most of the difficulties a GCSE English tutor sees in Year 10 began years earlier: skimming instead of reading closely, a narrow vocabulary, and writing without a plan.
Strong one-to-one English tuition in Years 4 to 6 deals with those habits while they are still easy to change. Children arrive at secondary school able to analyse a text, structure an answer and write with control, which is exactly what GCSE English asks of them later.
- Close reading and evidence skills
- Planned, structured writing
- Accurate grammar, spelling and punctuation

English Tutoring FAQs
A private English tutor works one-to-one with a child to improve reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, grammar and writing. Lessons are tailored to the child, so time goes on the skills they need most.
No. I specialise in primary English for Years 2 to 6, including the 11+ and KS2 SATs. This stage builds the reading and writing habits that GCSE English depends on, so strong primary tuition often prevents problems later.
Yes. Online lessons use a shared screen for reading texts and a whiteboard for writing, so I can comment on your child's work as they write. Many children find it easier to focus at home.
Read widely together and talk about how authors open stories, describe characters and build tension. Encourage short, regular writing with a quick plan first: beginning, problem, ending. Praise one specific good choice each time.
Yes. 11+ English usually includes comprehension and sometimes creative writing. I teach the comprehension question types, timing and how to plan a strong piece of writing under exam conditions. Read more on my 11+ preparation page.
Word classes, sentence structure, punctuation, tense and agreement, taught through real sentences so children understand how grammar changes meaning. This also covers the grammar, punctuation and spelling paper in the KS2 SATs.
